If you’re considering working in ABA and becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you’ll be stepping into a hands-on role that makes a big difference in people’s lives.
But what exactly does that look like? And how do you get started? That’s where our team comes in. Below, we’ll cover the basics of ABA, the key responsibilities of an RBT, and how important it is to complete an RBT training. By the end, you’ll have a clear picture of what it takes to join this rewarding field and why so many people find it worth the effort.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?
Simply put, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding and changing behavior. It’s based on the idea that behavior can be learned, increased or changed through different techniques. Essentially, we can teach new behaviors and reduce or replace others.
ABA is all about focusing on the ‘why’ behind a behavior. For example, if a toddler throws tantrums to get attention, an RBT might figure out ways to teach that person to ask for things in a healthier way.
What makes ABA unique is that it’s not just theory – it’s hands-on and applied. That means it’s used to solve real-world problems, and it’s rooted in data. In the world of ABA, everything gets measured. RBTs collect data on behaviors, track progress, and make decisions based on those numbers. This approach helps ensure the changes RBTs make are meaningful and long lasting.
ABA really can be used in many different settings, from schools to workplaces to clinics. The possibilities for growth are endless, and that’s what makes it such an exciting field.
The Role of an RBT in ABA Practice
If ABA is like a recipe for positive change, RBTs are the chefs who follow the instructions, add the right ingredients, and bring the vision to life. As an RBT, you’ll be right in the middle of the action, working directly with clients to carry out behavior plans designed by a supervisor, typically a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
So, what does an RBT actually do? Here’s a little snapshot:
- Implement Behavior Plans: Your supervisor will create a roadmap for each client (called a Behavior Intervention Plan or BIP), and it’s your job to follow that plan. This might include teaching new skills, like how to communicate or follow directions, or helping clients reduce behaviors that hinder their success.
- Collect Data: ABA is a science, and data is at its core. As an RBT, you’ll track progress by recording behaviors, successes, and challenges during each session. Don’t worry – this is something you’ll be trained to do!
- Provide Support: You’ll often be the friendly face clients see the most, so your role is just as much about building trust and creating a positive environment as it is about following the plan.
The good news is that you don’t do any of this alone. RBTs work under close supervision from BCBAs, who guide you through challenges, tweak intervention plans when needed, and make sure everything stays on track.
RBTs are the heart of ABA therapy. You’re the one building connections, celebrating victories (big and small), and seeing firsthand how your work changes lives. It’s an incredibly rewarding role that requires dedication, patience, and a willingness to learn – but if that sounds like you, you’re already on the right path!
