Module 10: Lesson 5 – Readings

Essential Video

The following video discusses five principles related to capacity/competence within Care Planning. Note: this video discusses these principles within the context of UK legislation and care planning, however these principles can also apply in other jurisdictions and within other support sectors.

In this lesson, we’ve talked about consent. A concept that has received a great deal of attention more recently is assent-based learning. Assent can be thought of as the expression of approval or agreement (in the absence of coercion). This video from the Daily BA explains how assent-based models of ABA can work.

Reflection Exercise

Reflect on the principles of capacity/competence and the role of assent in your professional practice. Consider the following:

  • How can you ensure that the individuals you support are genuinely giving informed consent or assent?
  • What strategies can you use to recognise and respect assent or dissent during teaching or support activities?
  • How might cultural, legal, or organisational contexts influence your approach to capacity and assent?

Write your reflection in 150–500 words, focusing on how these principles apply in your daily work. There is no grading for spelling or grammar—clarity of thought and genuine engagement are the key goals.
