Verbal Behaviour Parent Training Course
This short course provides an overview of some of the terminology used at Jigsaw School in relation to verbal behaviour and communication skills. There is a clear distinction between listener behaviour (following directions) and speaker behaviour (producing communication) and we also use terminology first described by BF Skinner in his book ‘Verbal Behaviour’ such as echoics, mands, tacts and intraverbals. This course should provide parents with a better understanding of this terminology.
At Jigsaw, we employ a Verbal Behaviour approach to teaching and supporting our students. This method, rooted in the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), focuses on the development and enhancement of communication skills. However, we recognise that the specialised language used in Verbal Behaviour can sometimes be difficult to grasp.
Our course is designed to demystify these terms and provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the Verbal Behaviour approach. Throughout this training, you will learn how we use specific techniques to promote language and communication skills in your children. You will also gain insight into how these strategies can be applied at home, fostering a supportive and enriching environment for your child’s growth.
We aim to empower you with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively support your child’s learning journey. By the end of this course, you will have a solid foundation in Verbal Behaviour terminology and practices, enabling you to collaborate more closely with our educators and contribute positively to your child’s development.
Thank you for joining us in this endeavour. Your engagement and commitment are invaluable as we work together to enhance the lives of our students. Let’s embark on this learning journey together, confident that we can make a meaningful difference in our children’s futures.
